this is a fanfic i have been doing for the past few months... adapted from a real life case..
I think Singaporeans might remember Anthony Ler.. the guy who got a teenager to kill his wife..
CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT EPISODE 1 =======================================================
THIS IS A VAGUE RE-ENACTMENT OF A REAL LIFE CASE HANDLED BY THE SPECIAL INVESTIGATION SECTION OF THE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT OF THE SINGAPORE POLICE FORCE.
=======================================================
A couple was quarreling in the middle of the night, and attracted the attention of their immediate neighbours.
"I have NO MORE money!" Jonathan Wong screamed at his wife, Diana Wong, while pulling at her arm. "Give me some money please!"
"No!" Diana shook his hand off, in front of their three-year old daughter, Huiling. "I want a divorce! I don't want to live with such a useless man like you! Come Huiling!" Diana grabbed her daughter's hand and stormed out of the flat, leaving Jonathan behind, staring at her with deep hatred in his eyes.
=======================================================
The next morning, Diana was waiting for a lift at the ground floor. She knew Jonathan was at work, and wanted to use this opportunity to pack hers and her daughter's belongings.
Diana came out from the lift on the 7th floor and was walking to her apartment when a boy came down from the staircase stealthily and whipped out a long kitchen knife, which was wrapped in a copy of "The New Paper", a daily tabloid.
=======================================================
OP Theme: TRIPLE NINE
=======================================================
A police cordon was set up around the lobby area of the 7th floor, where Diana Wong was stabbed to death brutally. The forensic scientist, Dr. Lau Jiahua, was conducting a test on the body, when two CID officers - Insp. Basil Yeo and his partner Sgt. Janet Lim were allowed entry into the cordon.
"Dr. Lau," Basil called out.
"Inspector Yeo," Dr. Lau replied. He stood up and looked at the two officers.
"So, what have we got?" Janet asked. Dr. Lau turned back, looked at the body and shook his head.
"Very, very bad." he said. "She was stabbed five times in the back," he squatted down, and showed the wounds to the officers. "And also, both her arms were slashed twice." he held up her arms, showing the officers the slash marks. "Considering the depth of the wounds, they must have been made with a kitchen knife."
"Time of death?"
"About three hours earlier. There are a few bruises here, which indicate that the killer was not really that strong. Just strong enough to overpower her, though it is enough to prove that the killer is a male, or a really strong female."
"Any signs of rape?" Basil asked, as Janet took down notes in her notebook.
"Nope, but her wallet was gone," Dr. Lau replied.
"So it's a robbery?" Janet presumed.
"Most likely. Anything else doc?" Basil asked again, placing his hands on his hips and looking down at the body.
"We found this piece of yesterday's New Paper near the circuit box," Dr. Lau passed a Ziploc bag with a torn edge of the newspaper to Basil, and pointed to the circuit box on the wall.
"Hmm..." Basil said, observing the Ziploc bag. "I wonder if Chua has done his job yet."
=======================================================
Meanwhile, Insp. Chua Weijie and his relatively older partner, Sgt. Viknash, have gone to Jonathan's office to inform him about his wife's death. They approach the receptionist at the counter.
"Excuse miss," Viknash said. "CID." he said, flashing his warrant card.
"Yes? May I help you?" the receptionist asked.
"Is there any Jonathan Wong working here?" Weijie asked.
"Used to, but he was sacked a few days ago." the receptionist replied. "Is anything the matter?"
"We need his help in a investigation into a murder," Weijie said. "What was he fired for?" the receptionist looked to the left and right, and then moved closer to him.
"Word is, he complained that the Boss didn't pay him enough," the receptionist said. "Then he got angry and
"Ok, thanks." Weijie said, as he and Viknash headed out of the office. Outside, the two officers discussed the case.
"Now where can this Jonathan character be man?" Viknash asked.
"I don't know.." Weijie replied. "He was retrenched, a few days later his wife was killed. What's more he isn't at home right now. Sir sent us to notify him, which means she did not send any other officer to do so... Something's really fishy here."
"This.. You'd better call Bas and Janet," Viknash said. Weijie nodded, and took out his mobile and started dialling, as they stepped into Weijie's Nissan Cefiro.
=======================================================
"So.. We have five stabs in the back and two slashes on each arm. Plus a few bruises here and there."
"Hello?" Basil spoke into his mobile phone headset, while driving. "Chua?" Janet looked at him as he mentioned Insp. Chua. "So he wasn't at work today?"
"Yeah, we suspect that he might have somehow been involved in his wife's murder," Weijie said, now standing outside a bank with Viknash.
"What do you mean?"
"A large sum of money was supposedly deposited into Jonathan Wong's account just an hour ago." he said.
"How large?"
"1.5 million dollars?"
"1.5 million?!" Basil exclaimed. Janet looked at him and raised her eyebrows. "I could buy a condo with that!"
"By the way, have you questioned the neighbours?"
"We'll do that tomorrow," Basil replied. "We have a lot of work to do with the case at hand.."
"We'll go with you guys tomorrow, if Diana Wong's wake is held."
"Ok." both Inspectors ended the conversation.
"Sir, what's going on?"
"Too many loopholes in this case," Basil said. "1.5 million is a large sum, but why was he able to get such a large sum of money as soon as his wife was killed?"
"Insurance?" Janet raised a possibility.
"It might be.." Basil replied. "We'll call up the insurance companies later."
=======================================================
At the Police Cantonment Complex, where CID HQ was located, the four officers were working hard on the case, when a door labelled 'ASP Ku' opened, and ASP (Asst. Superintendent of Police) Kitson Ku stepped out to check on his team.
"So guys," ASP Ku asked. "How's the case going on so far?"
"Not too shabby Sir," Viknash replied. "Basil and Janet are checking if Diana Wong had any insurance policy in which the beneficiary is her husband."
"They're working very hard, but how about you?" ASP Ku asked.
"Yes Sir Insp. Chua and I are listing the possible motives of the killer."
"Good." ASP Ku said. "People, gather around here!" he ordered. The four officers stopped what they were doing and gathered around their department head. "Excellent work so far everyone. Basil, Janet. Weijie, Viknash. I've never seen you people working so hard before."
"Thank you Sir!" the four of them shouted.
"Because of your excellent work, I want this case solved in 72 hours, without delay." he ordered. "Is that clear?"
"Yes Sir!" they replied, and went back to their work.
=======================================================
The next day, Diana's funeral wake was held at her void deck. Jonathan was kneeling down and sobbing in front of her picture, which was placed on an altar, with her coffin behind. The coffin area was concealed from public view with a ceiling-to-ground yellow canvas. His parents-in-law, and daughter were at a table near the altar, also crying.
Basil and Janet stepped up in front of Diana's picture and offered her joss sticks.
"Rest assured, Mrs. Wong." Janet said. "We'll find your murderer."
"Who.. Who are you?" Diana's father, Mr Teo asked.
"CID." Basil and Janet showed their warrant cards to the grieving parents. "We're here to question your son-in-law."
"He is not my son-in-law!" Mr Teo shouted. "He is a despicable rat! I would have beaten him long ago if not for my daughter!"
"Mr Teo calm down." Janet intervened.
"Jan you take here," Basil said. "I'll go question Jonathan."
=======================================================
A teenage boy walked past a playground. He entered the nearby Neighbourhood Police Post and sat down in front of the duty officer, who was busy taking down notes from an earlier resident's report.
"Yes boy?" the Sergeant asked.
"Officer." he said. "I killed someone."
"Give me a moment." the officer said, and turned a new page in his report file, and dialled the number to CID.
=======================================================
Weijie and Viknash were questioning a housewife living in the flat below Diana's.
"So you're saying they had an argument the night before Diana's death?" Weijie asked, as Viknash noted down the housewife's statement.
"Not only an argument, a very hot one indeed!" the housewife said.
"What were they arguing about?"
"Money lah!" the housewife exclaimed. "I quarrel with my husband about money all the time!"
"Excuse me ma'am we don't want to know what you do with your husband." Weijie reprimanded her.
"Jonathan was jealous Diana made more than him! She was an insurance agent, compared to his lowly junior office clerk job!"
"Was this the first time such an argument took place?" Viknash asked, to clarify the matter.
"No! No! No!" the housewife shouted. "They've argued over many things.. but most of the time they argued over money and the custody of the child!"
"That woman is too much.." Viknash turned around and looked at her door. "Typical busybody."
"Well, what can we do?" Weijie shrugged, as both of them went down the stairs, and saw Basil and Janet already waiting for them. "So what did you guys get?"
"Diana's parents apparently do not like Jonathan that very much." Janet reported. "Sir went to question Jonathan about the bank transfer, but that fellar... He cried so much, it makes me wonder whether he's really a man or not."
"Come on Jan," Viknash said. "You can't expect everyone to be so strong right, anyway it's his wife who was murdered!"
"What did you guys find out?"
"She was an insurance agent, he was a junior office clerk. Add in the ego. You do the math." Weijie replied.
"Equals jealousy?" Janet said, solving the "equation".
"Let's talk back at the office." Weijie said, pointing towards their cars, as Basil turned back to look at Jonathan, who was still kneeling down and sobbing, with a sceptic look.
"Junior office clerk." he sneered, and ran to catch up with the rest.
=======================================================
Back at the office in the evening, the four are collating the data they have collected over the day.
"The insurance company just called." Janet said, slamming down the phone.
"Hey Jan, relax with the phone lah.." Viknash joked, as she flashed a short smile.
"They claim that Diana Wong had bought a policy from them just a few days earlier, right after Jonathan was sacked."
"There was a call which came in earlier today." ASP Ku said, walking out from his office. "A boy confessed to stabbing Diana Wong."
"The case is solved then?" Weijie asked, throwing a file on the table.
"No Weijie," ASP Ku replied him. "The boy said he was instigated to do it."
"But by who?"
"Jonathan Wong." Basil shot out the name of his No.1 suspect. "I can practically hand him an Oscar for Best Actor right now."
"You mean to say, he was faking the crying?" Weijie asked. "It all ties in now," he concluded.
"Not yet." ASP Ku said. "We still have to bring the boy in to do a photo-fit. When can you do it?"
"We'll pick him up after school tomorrow."
"Ok then." their superior replied. "We'll stop here for today, but don't forget to list any new leads you find. First thing tomorrow, Weijie and Viknash, you two bring Jonathan Wong in for questioning."
"Yes Sir." both of them replied.
"Basil and Janet," he said. "In the morning, your job is to visit the insurance company where Diana worked, assuming she had bought her policy from her own company. Get the details and estimated payout from the company, and then get details of Jonathan Wong's bank account."
"Yes Sir." Basil replied.
"I've not finished Inspector," ASP Ku said. "I will call the bank to freeze his assets, and your second job is to bring in the boy for the photo-fit. Is that clear, the four of you?"
"Yes Sir!"
"Dismissed."

I have 6 episodes so far... here comes Episode 2...
CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT EPISODE 2 =======================================================
THIS IS A VAGUE RE-ENACTMENT OF A REAL LIFE CASE HANDLED BY THE SPECIAL INVESTIGATION SECTION OF THE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT OF THE SINGAPORE POLICE FORCE.
=======================================================
Jonathan Wong hastily hid the New Paper with the torn edge underneath a stack of New Papers next to his computer. He then turned off his computer monitor and made his way out of the house. Walking to the lift lobby, Weijie suddenly walked out and blocked his away.
"Jonathan Wong." Weijie said. Jonathan turned around, but he was blocked by Viknash.
"Going somewhere?" Viknash asked.
"Who are you people?" Jonathan asked. "What do you want? I have no money for you to take?"
"Do CID officers rob from civilians?" Weijie asked him.
"You people are CID?"
"Yes, and we need you to come back with us to aid in our investigation of your wife's death."
=======================================================
"Sir," Janet spoke into her mobile phone, on the line with ASP Ku. She and Basil were at the insurance company where Diana worked, and bought her own life insurance policy. "It seems that Diana bought her $1.5 million policy not too far back, just about two weeks ago. Yes. Her colleagues said that Jonathan was the one who forced her into buying the policy. Yes. Yah. Ok I'll let Sir know. Bye."
"What do I need to know?" Basil asked.
"ASP Ku asked us to check with her colleagues if she did mention any problems at home the few days before and after Jonathan was retrenched."
"Hmm... Ok." he replied.
=======================================================
OP Theme: TRIPLE NINE
=======================================================
Basil and Janet took a seat inside Mr Teo's house. Little Huiling was hiding behind a partially-opened door, and watching the CID officers' visit.
"Mr Teo, how was your relationship with your son-in-law?" Janet asked.
"He is not my son-in-law." Mr Teo replied. "Officer, I have said that many times."
"I'm sorry," Janet replied. "But this is what we must know. What did you think of him?"
"He was lazy and unrefined!" Mr Teo exclaimed angrily. "I don't know what my daughter saw in him, but their relationship was shaky after marriage."
"How often did you visit your daughter at her flat?" Basil asked.
"Almost every two to three days," Mr Teo replied. "Everytime Jonathan was at home, he was either reading the New Paper or at his computer."
"Sir, New Paper," Janet raised a point to Basil.
"Hmm.." Basil nodded. "It might have a connection. You mentioned
"Diana threatened a divorce immediately after Jonathan was retrenched," Mr Teo said. "He was very angry. She came to our place to stay the night before she.."
"Do you know anything about an insurance policy?" Basil cut in, to prevent Mr Teo from mentioning his daughter's death.
"Insurance policy?"
"Your daughter's colleagues claimed that Jonathan was at her office two weeks ago," Basil said. "He wanted Diana to set up her own life insurance policy."
"What?!" Mr Teo was shocked. "Nobody told me anything!"
"I think that's all we need to know," Basil said, as Janet followed him out of the flat. As they were walking along the corridor, Janet struck up a conversation.
"Poor little girl," Janet said, sighing. "She's not even four and her mother is gone."
"And to think her own father might be responsible for this whole incident!" Basil shook his head in disgust. "She might have to grow up as an orphan."
"People these days.. so desperate when it comes to money."
=======================================================
"You tell us what happened with your wife," Viknash said. He and Weijie were questioning Jonathan. "The night before she died."
"Diana was furious I spent all my money on alcohol." Jonathan said. "But what was I to do?! You tell me?! What would you do if you were sacked suddenly!?"
"Shut up," Viknash ordered him, as Weijie sneered at him from the back of the interrogation room. "I'm asking you questions I don't need you to tell me your life story."
"I asked her for more money," he said. "But she screamed at me. Told me off." he slammed the table. "Asked me for a DIVORCE!"
"And?"
"She called me useless!"
"Which gives you a reason to murder her right?" Weijie shouted. "Or even worse, pay an innocent teenage boy to do it? Hah?"
"Sir, calm down Sir.." Viknash said.
"He's obviously very guilty. I swear to God I will put you to the gallows." Weijie said, and went out, slamming the door.
=======================================================
"Ding dong ding dong, ding dong ding dong..." the school bell went, a melodic bell replacing the ringing bell of the old times. A white Honda Integra Type R drove into the school compound, and was stopped by the security guard. Basil flashed his warrant card, and the security guard directed him to the nearest avaliable carpark.
"Hey Kevin, McDonald's or Long John's?" a girl asked a boy from the upper secondary level, as he was wearing trousers instead of shorts, as they stepped out of the school building, walking towards the school gate. He was looking dazed and listless.
"Kevin Tang!" shouted a male voice from a distance away. Kevin and his girlfriend turned and saw the two CID officers, Basil and Janet, standing by the Honda Integra.
"Who are they?" the girl asked.
"I don't know.." Kevin said. He looked back at them, as Basil took off his shades, and began walking towards them with Janet. Both of them showed their warrant cards.
"We're CID." Janet said.
"CID?" the girl exclaimed in shock. Many of his schoolmates stopped and looked.
"We're aware that you made a report in one of the NPPs not too long ago, just a few days ago," Basil said. "We need you to come back with us to confirm something."
"Err.." Kevin looked at his friends and schoolmates, then back at the plainclothed officers. "Okay."
=======================================================
"Who instigated you to commit the murder?" Basil asked Kevin. He shook his head. "Kevin. If you're not going to tell us anything, you will be charged with murder, you know that?" the boy remained silent. "You're turning 16 soon. Being 16 means being liable to be charged in an adult court, which means you can be hanged too."
"Sir," Janet said. "Can I talk to you now? Outside?"
"Yeah sure Jan," he said. "Think about it." he patted Kevin on the shoulder, and walked out of the interrogation room with Janet. "What's up?" he asked, closing the door.
"I think he's probably shaken by the incident," Janet said. "Anyway he has already agreed to do the photo-fit, so I think we don't need to question him that much."
"If you say so," Basil shrugged, and went back inside the room.
=======================================================
A while later, Basil was looking at a printed copy of the digital photo-fit which was submitted by the boy.
"This looks alot like Jonathan Wong," he passed another copy to Janet.
"Yah, Sir.." Janet replied. "Shall we raid his flat?"
"Good idea," he said. "I will get Chua and Nash to assist us."
=======================================================
"Mr. Wong," Weijie said. "Where were you on the morning of your wife's death?"
"I was at work."
"You had been retrenched a few days earlier." Viknash interrupted.
"I was having my breakfast at the coffee.."
"Nobody saw you at the coffee shop!" Weijie shouted. "Don't think we never checked.."
"I was at the bank."
"Will you stop lying hah!?" Weijie shouted, losing his temper. He shone the light at Jonathan Wong's face.
"I am not."
"Sir, relax Sir," Viknash said, trying to calm his younger partner.
"Jonathan Wong." Weijie tried to control his temper. "For the bloody last time. Where were you on the morning of your wife's death?"
"I really did nothing!" Jonathan argued. "Inspector! She was my wife! Do you expect me to be able to kill her myself?"
"A 15-year old boy claimed that you instigated him to kill your wife. All the bloody evidence is against you!" Weijie shouted at him. "That boy outside has already identified you as the one who instigated him. You dare continue lying to us?" he screamed angrily, pointing outside the room. The door opened, and Janet stepped into the room.
"Sir," she called out to Weijie. Weijie went over to her, as she whispered something into his ear. He then nodded and she went back out. Weijie walked towards
"Now you stay here nice and tight," Weijie said, sneering into Jonathan's face. "Sergeant, we've got some work to do." he said to Viknash, as they both went out of the interrogation room.
=======================================================
Basil's Honda Integra and Weijie's Nissan Cefiro pulled up at the carpark. The four officers, two Inspectors and two Sergeants emerged from both cars, and headed towards the 7th floor flat. The four of them lined up outside the flat with their revolvers, and waited.
Even though they knew the flat was empty, this was a procedure they had to follow if they did not have the suspect in their immediate custody. Weijie and Viknash nodded to their colleagues, as Weijie launched a powerful kick, breaking the door open. They immediately went in to clear all the rooms in the 4-room apartment.
"Clear," Basil shouted, relaxing his ready pose and keeping his revolver in his pocket. He saw a computer and a stack of New Papers next to it.
"Everytime Jonathan was at home, he was either reading the New Paper or at his computer." Mr Teo said.
"Nothing here," Viknash walked out of the master bedroom, meeting up with Weijie and Janet. They looked into the study room and saw Basil examining a copy of the New Paper, from the day when Diana was killed. There was a faint brownish patch, and a torn of portion on the top right. Next to the computer table was a kitchen knife.
"Bas." Weijie said, walking into the room with the two Sergeants. "That is."
"It must be.." he said.
"FREEZE!" came a female voice. The four of them turned around and saw a woman pointing a revolver at them, with a few uniformed Corporals behind her. "Technology Crimes CID!"
"What the?" Basil and Viknash exclaimed.
"Get down on the floor, now!"
"Come on," Janet reached into her pocket. The other female officer's eyes widened, and she pointed her revolver at Janet.
"Don't even try.." the female officer said to her. "Search them."
"This is ridiculous!" Weijie exclaimed as the uniformed officers searched them. They produced four revolvers.
"Armed and dangerous eh.." the female officer said. "Let's see what else you've got."
"Sergeant," one of the Corporals said. "We've also got these warrant cards out."
"Yah Sergeant," Weijie said. "You'd better tell your men to keep their hands off this Inspector here."
"Erm..." she scratched her head, putting back her revolver. "I'm sorry Sir!" she apologised as the uniformed officers returned the weapons and identification to the Special Investigation Section officers.
"I can't imagine Technology Crimes being so inefficient," Weijie complained. "I remember hearing that you guys solved a number of hard to crack cases."
"So what are you people here for?" Viknash asked the female Sergeant.
"This man, Jonathan Wong," she said. "He is wanted for illegal activities on the net. What does Special Crimes want with him?"
"Murder," Basil replied, as Weijie examined the New Paper again. Viknash and Janet were busy dismantling the computer, to bring back to the office for examination.
"Murder?" she exclaimed, shocked.
"Next time, check to see if any other department has a related case before you strike," Weijie said sternly, as the Special Investigation Section officers left the apartment.
=======================================================
"How nice," Dr. Lau said, holding up in his hands, the torn piece and the copy of the New Paper with the torn edge, in front of the four officers. "These two pieces match perfectly," he said, putting them together on the table. "I've also done computer scans to prove my point."
"How about the brown patches?"
"Definitely bloodstains," a voice from the door of the lab replied. The four turned to see a beautiful woman in a lab coat.
"And you are?"
"Dr. Wong is my understudy,"
"Carrie Wong," she shook Weijie and Janet's hands. "Nice to meet you people."
"So, were the bloodstains Diana's?" Viknash asked.
"Type A+," Dr. Wong. "Same as Diana's."
"Also.." Dr. Lau said, walking over and picking up the kitchen knife. "I've retrieved some skin and blood samples from the sharp edge of the knife. They are definitely Diana's."
=======================================================
"Congratulations." Basil threw a copy of that day's New Paper on the desk in the interrogation room where Jonathan Wong was held. "You like to read the New Paper so much, that your murder weapon was concealed in a New Paper? Big mistake."
"I don't know what you're talking about," Jonathan replied.
"I have to congratulate you again," Basil said. He banged his right hand down on the table and pointed a finger at Jonathan Wong. "You are also wanted by Technology Crimes for illegal online activities. What have you got to say now?"
"I got nothing to say."
"You had better," Janet said, folding her arms. "Either way, you still go to prison. The question here is whether you're getting hanged or not."
"I really don't know what you're talking about," Jonathan said again.
"We have retrieved chat logs from your computer," Basil said. "Your chats with a 15-year old boy, enticing him with monetary rewards and other prestige if he helped you to kill your wife for her insurance money and your daughter's custody."
"Yah, don't have the idea that we are oblivious to that!" Janet shouted.
"You even promised to marry your daughter off to the boy when she grows up!" Basil grabbed Jonathan's collar and pushed him hard backwards, forcing him off the chair, and crashing to the ground. "You bloody despicable fiend.."
"SIR!" Janet screamed. She ran and pulled Basil back, just as he was about to hit Jonathan.
"ARGH!" Basil kicked the steel cupboard in the corner, creating a dent in its side, and breathed heavily, trying to calm down.
=======================================================
"So what have you gathered from this case?" ASP Ku asked, as the four officers were in the office.
"He's not admitting anything, but we have just enough to convict him Sir," Basil said.
"Good enough then. Charge him with murder," ASP Ku replied. "We cannot be dragging this case too long. Let the court take over from now. I am sure there are not anymore loopholes he can take advantage of."
"Yes Sir!" the four replied, and headed out of the room.
"Basil, Weijie, can you stay behind for a while?" ASP Ku asked.
"Yes Sir," both of them said, and turning back into the room, and closing the door.
"Weijie. DSP Ganesh from Technology Crimes just informed me that you were rude to one of his officers earlier. Is that true?"
"Yes and no Sir."
"No?"
"She was pretty oblivious to the fact that we were conducting an investigation, and immediately demanded we surrender even before knowing who we were."
"That is a normal human reaction."
"Sir," Weijie said. "We are police officers. We are not like any Tom, thingy or Harry off the street. We have a strong sense of deduction that has been trained in the Academy."
"I understand."
"That girl must be a newbie," Weijie remarked.
"You can't speak about people that way," ASP Ku said. "Basil, I heard you turned the interrogation room upside down."
"Yes Sir," Basil replied, admitting his error.
"Please don't do that again. Anyway, I will have another talk with DSP Ganesh, but in the meantime, both of you, please learn to keep your tempers in check. Is that clear?"
"Crystal clear Sir," Weijie replied.
"And Basil, the maintainence for the locker will be taken out from your paycheck. Any problems?"
"No problem Sir," he said, as the both of them headed out of the room.
=======================================================
Weijie opened the door as he and Basil walked out of ASP Ku's office. As he closed the door, he saw Jonathan Wong being led away by Janet and two other uniformed officers. Weijie stared hard at Jonathan, who saw his fixed gaze and flashed a sly smile.
"So how," Viknash asked. "What did Ku say?"
"Nothing much..." he replied. "Just something about that Sergeant.."
"Don't think too much.." Viknash said, seeing his partner seemingly staring into blank space.
"I'm not," Weijie replied. "I'm just feeling a little mixed up."
"How?"
"Jonathan and Diana's daughter," Weijie said. "She has already lost a mother, and now we've taken her father away from her."
"Don't think too much lah Sir," Viknash said, patting his shoulder. "Case is closed already. Sooner or later, another case will come by. So, tea break's on me?"
"Okay," Weijie said, smiling at his partner, as the both of them got up from their desks and headed to the canteen.

The boy turned on the torchlight and searched for the counter. He put down the torchlight, not noticing that it was shining on a cabinet with a bloodstain, and smashed the cash register with his hammer. "These people are rich man!" he said, grabbing the money from the cash register, notes of $5, $10 and $50 denominations, and stuffing them into his bag. "Why is the floor wet?" his girlfriend asked. The boy took the torchlight and shone it on the ground. It was a pool of red liquid. "Huh?" he wondered, and shone the light further up. There was a body lying in the red liquid. Being awakened from his sleep in the middle of the night to attend to a case was not what he exactly wanted, but it was part of the job scope. He saw Viknash already taking down Dr. Wong's notes. "So Sergeant, what have we got here?" "A man found her here, but she was already dead by the time." "Man.." Weijie said. "Why the hell would he be out here in the middle of the night?" "He was homeless lah," Viknash replied. "He claimed he was just about to fall asleep on the park bench when he saw the corpse staring right at him." "Died with her eyes open," Weijie shook his head in disgust. "Just look at the body..." Viknash said, pointing with his pen. "Bruises all over man.." "How did she die?" Weijie asked. "It appears that the killer bashed her head with this brick," Dr. Wong, who was wearing surgical gloves, held up a brick, which had bloodstains on it. "She was found with her clothes ravaged, and her skirt pulled down," Dr. Wong got up and stood next to the two officers. "I've got to bring her back to the station to see if she has been sexually assaulted," she said. "The possibility is very high.." Weijie said. "We also found her identification card," Viknash passed a Ziploc bag containing the IC to Weijie. "She's 16 this April. We also found her wallet.. but her money was intact." "Yvonne Ho Jiaying.." Weijie said, reading from the card. "Money intact?" "Sir, this is the third such murder so far," Viknash said, with a disgusted look. "Not yet. We have not confirmed whether she had been raped like the other cases.." ======================================================= The next morning, Weijie and Viknash went to see Dr. Wong at the forensic laboratory. The girl's body was "So, Dr. Wong," Weijie said, adjusting his fringe. "What have you discovered?" "She was indeed penetrated." Dr. Wong said, shaking her head. "I found dried blood in between her legs if you know what I'm talking about," she said. "I get your meaning," Weijie replied. "d**n this guy is sick man.." Viknash said. "Eh Dr. Wong, did you check her hymen?" "I did," the forensic scientist said. "Freshly torn. I can conclude she was definitely raped." "Wah Sergeant," Weijie mocked. "You seem to know so much about all this huh?" "No lah Sir," Viknash replied. "Just general knowledge." "Now that we have confirmed that this is indeed like the previous two," Weijie said, ignoring Viknash's last comment. "Ok Sergeant, now we go to her school." ======================================================= "So which means to say your shop has been robbed continuously over the past few weeks?" Janet asked, writing into her notebook, while taking down the statement of the coffee shop owner's son. "Yes!" he replied. "I wonder what you Police are doing... Report and report and report.. My friends have made many reports you know?!" he exclaimed. "All the stupid coffee shops down the street have already been robbed... Only left mine and the one down the road.." "Mr Tang, we are the CID," Basil interrupted him. "We are not responsible for such patrols. Now we are here because your father has been found dead, murdered." Mr Tang looked away from the officers. "Can you give us the tape from the CCTV?" Janet asked, spying a close circuit camera above the counter. "Ok sure," he replied, and went to get the tape. Basil and Janet turned to look at the spot of the murder, where a pool of blood was, and sighed. "Sir we found two pairs of shoes outside," a constable came in and reported. "One is a pair of Adidas while the other is Diadora. Both were stained with blood on the soles." "We'll check that out in a moment." Outside, Basil and Janet approached his Honta Integra after viewing the bloody footprints and shoes. "Sir," Janet said. "I noticed a pattern, and with this tape, it's gonna be an easy case," she said, holding up the tape and smiling. He unlocked the doors with the remote device. "We can't really say now," Basil said, getting into the car. "Don't you find that Tang Ah Soon's behaviour weird?" "How?" "His father's dead and all he can do is curse the Police?" Basil questioned, drawing a blank stare from Janet. "I guess that's the difference between Inspector and Sergeant, don't you think so?" he chuckled as he started the engine. ======================================================= The two CID officers, Insp. Chua and Sgt Viknash, were at the secondary school, where the deceased studied, during recess time. They were talking to her teacher in the General Office. "Yvonne was a very good girl," the teacher said. "She was very diligent and hardworking." "Who were her close friends?" Viknash asked. "Mandy... Clarice.. Georgia.." "Any boys?" Weijie probed further. "Like.. Did she have any boyfriends or did boys show interest in her?" "I'm not really sure.." the teacher said. "I'll get them here," the teacher said, and went to use the Public Announcement system. The three girls approached the door of the conference room, where the two CID officers were waiting. "Now girls," their teacher said, with tears visible in her eyes. "What you're going to find out in there, I want you to stay strong...ok?" she asked. The three of them nodded, as the teacher opened the door, letting them in. Weijie and Viknash were seated right in front of the projection screen, in front of a table. "Mandy, Clarice and Georgia?" Weijie asked. The three of them nodded. "Take a seat," he said calmly, as the three of them looked at each other, then seated themselves. "Do you know why you are here?" he asked them. They shook their heads. "Viknash you tell them," Weijie whispered to his partner, upon seeing their innocent faces. "Don't want lah Sir," Viknash tried to argue. "That is an order!" Weijie shouted, much to the shock of the three. "Ok lah Sir," Viknash agreed unwillingly. "You win," he said, then turned his attention to the three girls. "Girls. Mandy, Clarice, Georgia," he was very reluctant to break the news. "Yvonne was raped and murdered late last night." he declared, as the three broke into tears immediately. "Girls!" Weijie shouted. "Calm down! We need your help in our investigations!" "Now I want you to tell us," Viknash said. "When was the last time you saw Yvonne?" "Two days ago," Mandy blurted out, within sobs. "In the afternoon.." "Where did you go and what did you do?" Weijie asked. "We went to Plaza Singapura for shopping..." "As simple as that?" Weijie probed further. Mandy nodded. "What does she normally do alone?" "You mean at home? she asked, wiping her tears. "She's usually on the net." "Do you girls use ICQ..IRC or anything like that?" "She uses IRC." "I think that's all the information we need," Weijie said, snapping his fingers. "Sir?" "Come on Sergeant," Weijie told his partner. The both of them headed out of the room. ======================================================= Basil and Janet were with ASP Ku, watching the videotape from the CCTV. Basil had the remote control in his hand, and was forwarding the tape. There were a number of tapes on the table, taken from the NPC where the other coffee shop owners had went to report about the previous robberies. "Nothing much on this tape," Janet said. "Do you think he could have given us the wrong tape?" "No," Basil replied. "I'm positive about it. I saw him take the tape from the recorder under the counter," he said, while concentrating on the television. "There." he paused the forwarding when he noticed the door opened, and two teenagers, a boy and a girl, stepped in. He then resumed play. "The same couple from the other tapes!" "Clear the cordon from the scene of crime!" ASP Ku ordered. "Stake out the coffee shop for the next few nights. I want this couple nabbed in 72 hours." "Yes Sir!" both of them shouted, clearing the files on the table. ======================================================= "Weijie," ASP Danielle Hon, the administration head of the Special Investigation Section, had summoned Weijie to her office, which was just next to ASP Ku's. "I've reviewed your running case, and noticed that all three of them murders involved online chats?" "Yes Ma'am," Weijie replied. "Sgt Nash and I are working very hard on this case. We have a plan to pose as a female user and lure the killer out.." "No need," ASP Hon said, as somebody knocked on her door. "Come in," she called out loudly, closing the case file and standing up. Sgt Ang from the Technology Crimes division stepped into her office. "This is Sgt Jess Ang, from Technology Crimes.." she said, as Weijie turned around. "She?!" "Him!?" "Ma'am.. You must be making a mistake.." Weijie tried to argue. "I don't think I've made any mistake," ASP Hon said sternly. "Sgt Ang will pose as the female user, and lie in wait in the channel." "Ma'am why don't we just track the idiot's IP and arrest him at his house?" Weijie asked. "Because we'd be walking right into his own territory," ASP Hon replied. "The best way is to arrest him in public where we can surround him without him even knowing. So I trust, that you, Sgt Ang and Sgt Viknash can work together?" "Yes Ma'am," Weijie said, and walked out of the room, not before glaring at Jess. "What's wrong with him?" Jess asked ASP Hon. "He might appear cold on the outside but once you break into his interior, you'll find out that he's actually a very good cop," ASP Hon said. ======================================================= END =======================================================

CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT EPISODE 4 =======================================================
THE CONTENT OF THE FOLLOWING EPISODE IS FICTIONAL. ANY RESEMBLANCE TO THE LIVING OR DEAD IS PURELY COINCIDENTAL.
=======================================================
"Why don't you guys just hand this case over to the Serious Sexual Crimes branch?" Jess asked, while opening the mIRC client program on the office computer. "Isn't their office just down the hallway?"
"This case involves murder," Weijie said. "Any case no matter whether rape, robbery, burglary.. As long as somebody is murdered it's our job."
"Ooo.." she cooed. "Interesting."
"Yah so will you just shut up and log on to the server?"
"Okay! Okay!" Jess said. "Don't have to be so mean?"
"That's just the way he is lah," Viknash told her. "Don't take it to heart."
"Sergeant," Weijie tapped his shoulder. "Don't make me demote you to NPCC! (National Police Cadet Corps)"
"Relax lah Sir!" Viknash argued.
=======================================================
OP Theme: TRIPLE NINE
=======================================================
"Okay.. Let's see..." Viknash said, reading a few printed papers. They were the only ones left in the office that night. "From the chat logs we found in Yvonne's computer.. The nickname she had the most chats with was this fellar called HardGuy85.."
"85 ah.. It could mean his birth year," Weijie said. "1985 means he would be 20 this year," he deduced. "Can you like find the nickname?"
"Okay," Jess said, and scrolled through the list of nicknames. Due to the popularity of the channel, the list was long. Not soon after she logged in, a number of users private messaged her. "Wait. I don't need to search anymore. HotGuy85." she said, pointing to the nickname on the private message tabs.
"hey babe. u need some cash?" was the message that came from HotGuy85.
"how?" Jess replied in the most innocent manner possible.
"Eh, you guys want any drinks?" Viknash asked. "I'm getting a little lethargic already.. Need to move.."
"Don't bluff, you're getting old right?" Weijie snapped.
"That also lah.." he laughed. "So any drinks? Sir?"
"The usual thing lah," Weijie replied, irritated.
"What usual thing?" Viknash asked.
"Black coffee," Weijie said. "I don't want any sugar or cream remember."
"Man are you serious or not?" Weijie asked. "Better go take some memory pills."
"Black coffee without sugar or cream?" Jess frowned. "You're sick in the head, really."
"What the.."
"Anyway just get me a Milo will do," Jess said, smiling.
=======================================================
In the middle of the night, Basil and Janet were in his car, staking out the last coffee shop in the area which has not been robbed. They were expecting the same burglars to strike again that night.
"You really think they will come?" Janet asked. "It's aready 2.30AM.." she said, looking at her watch.
"I'm not going to officially give up until 5.30," Basil said. "We can apply for leave after this case is done."
"Oh okay.." Janet replied, feeling a little tired after a whole night, listening to music and just chatting to Basil about life. The young couple approached the back door of the coffee shop. The male was carrying a haversack, while the girl "Sir, look." she pointed towards the two.
"Okay we wait till they're inside, then we move."
=======================================================
"Sir," Jess was busy printing the chat log. "I've arranged to meet him at 10.30pm tomorrow night, at the grass patch behind Wisma Atria," she said, passing the printed copy to Weijie.
"Good. We arrest him in public, embarrass the bugger." Weijie said, taking a quick glance and shoving the paper back at her. "Now we can go home and sleep!" he exclaimed, grabbing his car keys from his desk. As he approached the exit, Viknash returned with the drinks he bought.
"Finished already?" Viknash asked.
"Sergeant why so slow?" Weijie asked. "Lost your memory and forgot the way is it?"
"Ahh you drink it lah," he shouted from the corridor. Viknash turned to Jess, and saw her laughing.
=======================================================
"Tell me," Basil said in the interrogation room with the boy. "Does the morning air feel that good to you?"
"No Sir."
"Then why the heck are you out with your girlfriend so early in the morning huh?" Basil asked. "Breaking into coffee shops... Stealing money... MURDERING innocent old men?"
"What murder?"
"Don't play dumb with me man," Basil said. "Did you just lose a pair of blue Diadora shoes?"
"Yes, yes!" the boy exclaimed.
"We found them not far from the coffee shop where an old man was murdered. The soles were blood-soaked." Janet said. "How do you explain that?"
"Where were you on the wee hours of the morning two days ago?" Basil asked.
"Stella and I broke into the coffee shop you mentioned," the boy finally admitted. "No.. Wait.. I didn't actually break into the coffee shop. The door was opened, I only had to break the lock."
Basil and Janet looked at each other.
=======================================================
"I asked Roy if he knew why was the floor wet," Stella said. "Then he shone the torchlight on the ground, and we saw the dead body of the old man."
"So you never did anything to the old man?" Janet asked, as Basil went to answer a call. Stella shook her head.
"Ah, ok." Basil put down the phone. "Jan," he hinted to her to go outside for a while.
"Sir?" she asked.
"Dr. Lau says the fingerprints of both of them were not found on neither the body nor the murder weapons," he said.
"Both their statements correspond with each other," Janet said. "They might not be the ones responsible for the murders."
"Well, charge them with criminal trespassing and house-breaking by night anyway," Basil said. "We'll question our friend Ah Soon again tomorrow."
"I'll work on that." she replied, and got down to work. Basil turned around and yawned loudly, a sign that he has not had much rest since taking up this case.
=======================================================
It was late in the afternoon, and Weijie, Viknash and Jess had just reported for work, after spending the morning at home sleeping due to their very late knock-off time the night before.
"So Inspector, what have you got?" ASP Hon asked. She was busy sorting the files on her desk, while getting the latest report from Weijie. "I'm sure after whole night of black coffee you would have at least found something right?"
"We've arranged a meet-up with the guy tonight," Weijie reported, feeling a little embarrassed about the black coffee. "Sgt Ang will be the bait, while Nash and I will be staking out the area separately."
"Don't forget to place a bug on her. Get a few constables to help you tonight," she ordered. "We must nab him before he brutalizes any more innocent girls."
"Yes Ma'am." he said, and headed out of the room.
=======================================================
Jess was dressed in a tank top and jeans, holding one white and one red rose. She was posing as a 17-year old polytechnic student, and was looking out for the suspect, who was supposed to be carrying the exact same roses. She was not carrying any firearms.
Viknash sat amongst the Filipina maids, who usually flocked to busy the Orchard MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) area during the weekends. He was posing as a Bangladeshi worker, and did not seem too suspicious.
Weijie was sitting inside a 24-hour cafe in Wisma Atria, which had a good view of the park where Jess was supposed to meet the suspect. He was drinking a cup of iced coffee and reading a newspaper.
"I think I see him," Jess said.
"Ok," Weijie replied. "Jess you be careful. Nash get into position."
"Yes Sir," Viknash stood up and got ready to cross the road, to where the park was. Weijie folded the newspaper, and placed it down. He reached into his jacket and made sure both revolvers - his own and Jess' - were there.
"Hi, are you cherrygal?" a voice asked Jess from behind. She turned around, and saw a tall, well-built man. No wonder he was able to brutalize the girls so easily. She felt intimidated, although she knew she was older than him.
"HotGuy85?" she asked.
"Yah.."
"Suspect has taken the bait," Weijie said. "We shall move in now," he alerted Viknash and Jess. Jess began to try distract him.
"So you said you could pay me some... cash?" she asked, seeing that the road was becoming emptier. "How?"
"Don't worry.." he approached her slowly. "It will all be painless..."
"You're not going anywhere," came Weijie's voice.
"What?" the suspect looked up. Jess grabbed his arm.
"Police!" she shouted.
"You!" he threw her arm up and pushed her to the ground, then began running.
"What the f..?!" Weijie exclaimed. "Here!" he passed to Jess her revolver, and whipped out his own. Both of them began chasing after the suspect. "Suspect approaching Ngee Ann City!"
"Roger!" Viknash was running through the crowd, looking for the suspect. He finally spotted the suspect nudging his way through the crowd. "I saw him Sir!"
"Tell me for what? Get him!" Weijie shouted. Viknash took out his revolver, drawing attention from the crowd. Viknash also pushed his way through the crowd, until he came face-to-face with the suspect. He pointed his revolver at the suspect.
"You, stop. Now." he said, just as an exhausted Weijie and Jess came up behind him, panting. The crowd stood still, watching the action unfold as the two officers held up their revolvers at the suspect while Weijie handcuffed him.
=======================================================
"Hello friend!" Weijie splashed black coffee in the suspect's face, then threw the cup onto the ground and shone the lamp into his face, grabbing his shirt collar. "You'd better talk or else..You're making me lose my bloody patience."
The suspect remained silent. Jess walked over to him and gave him a slap, then threw three photographs in front of him. They were photographs of the corpses of the three girls.
"Why are you showing me this?" the suspect finally spoke.
"Oh so now you wanna talk is it?" Jess asked. "These are young, pretty, clever and innocent girls!"
"And yet you preyed on them like mere objects!" Weijie shouted, and slammed the table with his hand.
"We'll give you one more chance," Viknash said, crossing his arms. "We have all the evidence against you. Whether you tell us or not, we can still charge you with the same crime." Viknash warned him. The suspect still remained silent.
"Never mind," Weijie said, standing up "Bastards like him can go to hell. Sergeant, file a charge against him. We have all the evidence to convict him already."
"Sir, wait," Jess said.
"What is it Sergeant?"
"Before you cuff him I'd like to do something," Jess requested.
"Okay," he said. Jess walked over to the suspect and stared at him hard.
"Wanna get hot with me babe?" he asked.
"Fat chance," Jess replied, and delivered a hard punch into his face.
=======================================================
"Get out," Weijie pushed the suspect out of the interrogation. He was now cuffed, and it complete police custody. Basil walked into the office, saw the suspect's face and stopped.
"Eh, getting a little too rough these days ah?" Basil said, laughing.
"Don't anyhow accuse me I didn't do anything," Weijie said, pointing to the interrogation room, as Jess came out.
"Woah.." Basil said.
"How's your case?" Weijie asked.
"d**n it.." Basil said. "No leads.. No witnesses.. Even my main suspects had proven alibis."
"Tough luck," Weijie replied. "I got work to do, I chat with you later ah. Come on!" he pushed the suspect, and continued bringing him to the lock-up, as Basil walked to his desk.
=======================================================
"Weijie," ASP Ku said. "Meet your new partner, Sgt Jess Ang," he pointed to the door, as Jess stepped into the room smiling.
"Not she again?!" Weijie exclaimed. "What the? Sir, you must be kidding. Sir!"
"I'm not kidding Inspector." ASP Ku replied. "Sgt Viknash submitted a letter commending her for her efforts in the latest case, and suggested you partner
"How about Nash?" Weijie asked. "Retiring already? Or going solo?"
"There's a new Inspector coming in from Anti-Vice."
"Who?"
"I haven't been given his profile yet," ASP Ku said. "But I hope his temper isn't uncontrollable like yours?" he joked.
"Come on lah Sir," Weijie said. "When have I ever had a problem with discipline?"
"Then I'm sure you won't mind your new partner?" ASP Ku asked him. Weijie kept silent for a while, then admitted defeat.
"Yes Sir," he replied.
"Good." ASP Ku said, as Weijie walked out of the office with Jess.

CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT EPISODE 5 =======================================================
THE CONTENT OF THE FOLLOWING EPISODE IS FICTIONAL. ANY RESEMBLANCE TO THE LIVING OR DEAD IS PURELY COINCIDENTAL.
=======================================================
A truck was speeding down a deserted road, chased by a green Mazda RX-8 with a blue siren on top of its hood. Two Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers were chasing a suspected drug trafficker who had a truck loaded with crates.
"Bloody hell," the driver of the Mazda RX-8, a Malay Inspector, cursed. "This bastard is driving for his bloody life."
"Relax lah sir," the front passenger said. "It's not as if it's the last case of your career."
"It might be for you if you don't shut up," the Inspector snapped back. "I'm trying to focus on the driving ok?"
Suddenly the truck skidded and crashed into a metal barrier along the road. The Inspector stepped on the brakes just in tme, bringing the car to a standstill.
"Action time," the Inspector said, and got out of the car quickly.
=======================================================
"Get out," the Inspector waved his revolver at the driver, who immediately opened the door. The Inspector reached and grabbed him down by the shirt. "Sergeant, what have you found?" he asked his partner, who was walking towards them after inspecting the cargo of the truck.
"A whole crate of heroin sir," the Sergeant replied, holding up a few packs of heroin. "I think those other crates also contain the same thing." The Inspector grabbed one packet of heroin and looked at it.
"Where the hell did you get this from?" he asked, but the driver was silent. "Oi!" he slapped the packet in the driver's face. "Don't want to talk? Fine. The whole lot behind should be more than 15 grams. Talk or not you're going to get hanged," he passed the packet of heroin back to the Sergeant. "Come on Sergeant pack up, don't need to waste any more time when we've caught him with the drugs."
=======================================================
OP Theme: TRIPLE NINE
=======================================================
"Inspector Azmi bin Ismail," ASP Kitson Ku read out from the front cover of a file. The Inspector from earlier was standing in front of his desk. "Three years good arrest record with CNB, now you're requesting a transfer to CID. Why?"
"I need a change of environment sir," Azmi replied. "I was getting tired of three years drug work."
"I see," ASP Ku replied. "I hope you won't get bored of Special Crimes though. I just brought in a new Sergeant last week."
"Partner?"
"No, she's not going to be your partner," ASP Ku said. "Since you are new to the department I'd rather partner you up with a veteran so that he can help you adjust to the department." he explained, as the door clicked open.
"Sir?" Viknash popped in. "You wanted to see me?"
"Ah yes, Nash," ASP Ku replied. "Come in," he said, as Viknash trudged in and closed the door. "I want you to meet Inspector Azmi, who has just transferred from CNB."
"Er, yah, hi," Viknash said, extending his hand. Azmi shook hands with Viknash.
"Sergeant Viknash," ASP Ku said, introducing him. "He's my most experienced officers, having been with the Force for twelve years, five of that years with CID. Since you're new I'd rather you stick with an experienced partner, to familiarise yourself with the environment around here. So any problem you two?"
"No sir!" the both of them replied, and left the room, as Basil and Janet walked in, with a few files in hand.
"So how's your case you two?"
"No luck sir," Basil replied. "We got no leads, no fingerprints, nothing at all."
"How many times have you inspected the crime scene?"
"Five to six," Janet replied.
"Inspect it again," ASP Ku ordered. "I am sure there would be at least one clue. What did the two teenagers say?"
"They claimed not to know anything," Janet replied. "Their statements concide with each others, and we deem them not guilty of the murder, but we've additionally charged them with trespass and break-in."
"How about Dr. Lau's report?" ASP Ku asked.
"Dr. Lau's autopsy is a little conflicting with the external evidence," Basil said. "There were eight stab wounds, but Dr. Lau claims that a catalyst was used to poison the victim to death. Since no controlled drugs were found in his system, Dr. Lau suggested Erythropoietin."
"Wait, Inspector," ASP Ku said. "English please."
"Erythropoietin, or EPO, is a hormone produced in the liver. It is administered to anaemia patients as it can increase the production of haemoglobin, which in turn means more blood can be produced," Basil said, reading from the autopsy file.
"How did Dr. Lau arrive at this conclusion?"
"The high blood density levels in the victim's circulatory system accounts for the discovery," the Inspector replied. "Dr. Lau also noted in his report that EPO can be used as a steroid, as it increases blood production, which can mean improved endurance."
"Yeah sir," Janet turned to Basil. "You haven't told me. What would an old guy need steroids for?"
"Ever heard of Viagra?" Basil said.
"Er.. Well, okay.."
"Though, EPO can also be a killer if overused," Basil turned the page. "The report states that while EPO can increase blood production rate, it can also thicken the blood, making it harder to pass through capillary tubes. It can also cause the heart to beat slower, making the user more prone to heart failure."
"Since you brought this up," ASP Ku said. "Is it possible the old man might have tried to use EPO as a subsitute for Viagra?"
"The possibility is there," Basil replied. "But why, isn't Viagra widely sold in the market?"
"Unless someone was making money out of selling EPO as cheaper grade stimulant," ASP Ku pointed out.
"But who?"
"I'll ask the new Inspector," ASP Ku replied. "He was from CNB before coming here. In the meantime, Basil, you will be the head IO (Investigating Officer). I'll get Weijie and Jess to assist you on this case too. We're dragging this simple murder too long already."
"Yes sir," both of them replied, and headed out of the office.
=======================================================
"So Bas," Weijie spoke to his colleague on the phone handsfree set as he drove. "What's our plan this time?"
"Janet and I are going to check up on Tang Ah Soon," Basil said. "You and Jess just need to get any sufficient info on them from their closest neighbours."
"Okay..." Weijie replied, hanging up. "So Jess,"
"Yah?" she asked.
"All we need to do is question their next door neighbouur," Weijie said. "Since Ah Soon was living alone with his father, the next door neighbour might know if they had any quarrels, and if they did, what were the quarrels about."
"Wah sir," Jess exclaimed. "You really think that far."
"This comes from experience," Weijie replied. "I've been in Special Crimes for about two years."
"Two years?! How old are you?"
"Can I choose to remain anonymous?" he said. "Let's say.. somewhere in the later twenties' okay?"
"Sure.." she laughed. "Did you see the new guy?"
"Aren't you new yourself?" he shot back.
"No, no, the CNB guy," Jess replied. "He just came for work this morning."
"Oh is it? I didn't see anyone." he replied. "Anyway, I'll drop you off here," he said, stepping on the brakes as he entered the carpark of the neighbourhood.
"Why?"
"I'll find a place to park, then I'll meet you at the void deck," he replied.
"Oh okay," she said, unstrapping the seat belt and getting out of the car.

"$100... $150.." Tang Ah Soon was busy counting money from his cash register. It was another day of work at the coffee shop, but he appeared to be counting the money very hastily. The other stall owners who had nothing to do were pointing at him and whispering among themselves. "What?" Ah Soon shouted. "Nothing better to do is it?" he asked, to which they chickened out and went back to work.
"Well, well, Tang Ah Soon.." came Basil's voice. Ah Soon looked up and saw the two CID officers staring right at him. "A little bit too early to count money eh?" Basil said, looking at his watch. "The sign outside states you don't close till midnight."
"No lah sir.." Ah Soon replied, sweating.
"Now why the heck are you sweating?" Basil said, putting his hand around Ah Soon. The other stall owners, thinking otherwise, stepped up to stop Basil, but Janet took out her pass and showed it to them, identifying both of them as CID officers.
"Weather is hot sir.."
"Weather is hot eh?" Basil said. "Look at what Sergeant Lim and I are wearing.." he said, pointing to Janet's attire - a pink blouse, and black pants, and his own - green shirt and black trousers. "Are we even sweating man?"
"What do you want with me now sir?"
"No.. No..." Basil replied. "Nothing," he said, letting Ah Soon go. "We just wanted to see how you were coming along since your father died."
"Ok lah, ok lah," Ah Soon replied hastily.
"Man why are you so nervous?"
"You just come here and disturb me like that," Ah Soon said. "I never expected you to come today what.."
"Yo Ah Soon!" shouted a burly man, with two companions. All of them had tattoos and were wearing Rolex watches. One of them had a short crew cut with green and blue coloured streaks. Ah Soon turned around and closed his eyes, afraid. "Who are these people?" the man asked, referring to Basil and Janet.
"Well who the heck are you?" Basil retorted.
"Hey! You better talk to our boss plopely ah!" one of the man's companions said.
"It's properly you idiot." Janet said, rolling her eyes.
"You not happy is it?" the other of his companions said, pushing his shoulder.
"You sound like the one not happy here," Basil replied.
"Then what?" he shouted. "You better watch out ah," he threatened Basil.
"What are you going to do?" Basil laughed. "Call customer service? Come on Sergeant, we've got better things to do." he said, eyeing the gangsters as he and Janet walked out of the coffee shop.
"Hey Ah Soon.." the head gangster called out to him. "You dare to call police?"
=======================================================
"They were always quarreling about money!" the neighbour said, as Jess took down notes. "Ah Soon owned the loan sharks money.. So they were always harassing him. Uncle Tang was rich, but he refused to give his son money to pay off the loan."
"Ma'am.. These loan sharks.." Weijie said. "Have you seen them?"
"Yah yah!" she replied. "There were three of them. One of them had very short hair, very havoc. Green and blue coloured hair also have."
"Sergeant, you got that down?" he asked Jess.
"Yes sir," she smiled, holding up the notebook.
"Anything else peculiar about the old man?" Weijie asked.
"Har?"
"Peculiar."
"What colour?"
"Strange. Anything not right about the old man?"
"He.. He always came home late at night. Sometimes he brought home women!" the woman said. "I don't think those are clean women though.."
"Okay.. Thanks Ma'am." he turned and walked away as Jess smiled to the neighbour and followed behind her partner.
=======================================================
"So you think Ah Soon killed his father for money?" Weijie asked. The four officers were at a Starbucks cafe reviewing their earlier investigations.
"Yeah, the neighbour said, Ah Soon ran high gambling debts and owed the loan sharks money, but his father refused to help him."
"I checked with the stall owners," Janet said. "The loan sharks visit the coffee shop quite often, but what about the EPO?" she asked, reviewing the file. "There was also an incident when the loan sharks scribbled 欠$还命 instead of the usual 欠$还$." (欠$还命 stands for Owe Money Pay Life, which is unusual, as loan sharks usually scribble 欠$还$, which means Owe Money Pay Money)
"The neighbour said Old Tang sometimes brought women home very late at night," Jess said. "Cheeky old man.."
"Dr. Lau said in his report, Old Tang was stabbed while lying on the ground," Basil reported.
"How long does EPO normally take to take effect?" Jess asked.
"Very quickly, around 20-30 minutes," Janet said.
"Since sir, you said that Old Tang was stabbed while on the ground," Jess started.
"Not me, Dr. Lau."
"Okay, Dr. Lau then. Since he said Old Tang was on the ground, do you think the EPO could have killed him before Ah Soon stabbed him?"
"It's possible." Basil said, nodding to Weijie. "He also might have stabbed Old Tang to make it look as if the loan sharks did it."
"Well, I think those guys you clashed with earlier were the loan sharks," Janet said, nudging Basil.
"Eh?" Weijie got interested. "Describe them."
"Only can remember one had green and blue streaks on his hair," Basil replied.
"Aha!" Weijie pointed out. "Bingo. Let's arrest the whole bunch of them."
