Lahm, Klose (2) and Frings for Germany, Wanchope (2) for Costa Rica. Lahm was inspirational enough. His goal in the 6th minute actually intensified the whole game. Germany's spirits were lifted. Costa Rica was bent on revenge. Wanchope plants the 12th minute goal just nicely to negate all adverse morale effects Lahm had sowed on Costa Rica. His breakthrough between two German defenders was rather specatacular, and it revealed that the Germans were weak in their central defense. Klose followed soon to effect another goal, courtesy of Schneider. The German captain could have taken the shot himself, he was near enough after taking the pass from the right flank. But there was one defender in front of him, and he had the courtesy to forfeit a shot to send it to Klose, who was relatively more open. Klose, who scored his hat-trick against Saudi Arabia in 2002 with only his head, put this goal in with his left foot. In the second half, Klose gave a solid header when he caught a cross from the left flank. It bounded off Parras but he was quick enough to put one boot to the ball before Parras could catch it, and there was the third goal for Germany. By no means was Costa Rica demoralized. They intensified the pace of the game, and it was apparent that the Costa Ricans were charged with energy. Wanchope tore the central German defense down again, and shot the ball right into the German net as Lehmann flipped over in vain to get the ball. When it seemed 3-2 would be the final score, Frings attempted a long shot from outside the 18-yard area which crashed right into the Costa Rican net, as Parras also dived in vain to save. 6 goals in the opening game of World Cup, is that a herald for more exciting matches to come? Noteworthy players: GERMANY 1. Jens Lehmann - Costa Rica had very few shot attempts, less than 5. To think that he let in 2 of them, maybe Kahn should come down the next match 3. Friedrich - A rather good winger, who brought the ball forward then pass to the strikers to attempt a goal. 7. Schweinsteiger - An involved midfielder, who had a number of occasions in bringing the ball up the flank or through the middle to give a chance to the strikers. 8. Frings - Besides his momentary collapse from a tackle and his spectacular long shot, he was only moderately involved. 10. Neuville - Came in late and does display some ball skills. But seems to get pushed around by the Costa Rican players. 11. Mikhail Klose - The striker who gave Germany 2 goals to bag, who else but this tall forward invites more attention? 16. Lahm - The inspirational winger/forward who weakened the Costa Rican defense many a time, and then passed the ball over to more open strikers. 20. Podolski - Perhaps the most unlucky player. Plenty of chances, plenty of shots. Either off or blocked. COSTA RICA 6. Fonseca - Booked for blocking a free kick by Germany. Otherwise quite dangerous too, for he heads down the German central a few times. 9. Wanchope - Costa Rica's hero. Scored all the goals. Fast runner, dangerous to Germany. ?. Parras - He may have let in 4 goals, but he blocked some too.

I missed the games after the opening game due to Ubin camp, but I've been updating myself with the results by sms and phone calls every night.
Now I'm back I can focus on the WC more.
T&T and Sweden drawing is a real shocker. Ivory Coast's skill was stunning, but too bad they still lost to the Argentine giants.
Holland, still as cautious in their playing as with the Johann Cruyff era, managed a 1-0 against Serbia & Montengro, which I find disappointing for a team like Holland. Italy's 2-0 was also very disappointing, for a team which has won the trophy 3 times.
I'm rooting for Germany too, as with in 2002. They might win due to homeground advantage.
Brazil is still very strong, they will be playing their first match tonight, and I will be watching it from McDonald's at Bedok Reservoir..LOL
Korea and France are also coming along tonight.
The biggest shocker so far is Japan's loss! d**n those Aussies!

rather shocked with ysd nite's czech and usa, though czech's victory is rather predictable but i'll nv think that usa not able to score.
i'm all out for our azzurri! ITALIA that is, not a hot favorite, but definitely not to be underestimated. Did anybody catch the ita and ghana's match ysd? it was awesome, i'm kept excited the entire night. and no, italia did not disappoint me, ghana was no push over, in terms of physical strength, ghana has an upperhand, their debut to the cup was a blast. all i felt that the african teams are that, they have the potential to the one of the top, they play like brazil and hold the stamina and strength like argentina. the azzurri won in strategies and teamwork, by experience that is. oh, and not to mention with a few injured ones the italia have, totti hasn't even recovered fully yet. so in all, it was a match well-played. im satisfied.
japan's loss was a saddening case. GO NIHON-JIN!

haha, of course! that goes without saying! haha, but im rooting for czech too cause its a stunningly graceful and beautiful team, I'm sure they'll make it to the top, and its in group e as well! oh, i hope both of them got in!
for the team who will clinch the award, no comments. there's too many strong teams coming out. the Germs, the croatians, brasil, england.. as far as till now, its unpredictable. of course I'll hope that my lovely azzurri will get it! <33
btw, I predict brasil and croatia will be an interesting match, i've got a feeling, brasil MIGHT MIGHT lose its standing against this arch rival.

for that group, Brazil and Croatia will most likely go through. do not forget the Croatians were 3rd at France 98, which was their first appearance at the World Cup.

Argentina 6-0 Serbia and Montenegro What's so good about this match? Of the matches I watched, one of the lowest number of yellow cards, indicating a respect for the game, not a blind pursuit of victory. There was one red card. For a sliding tackle that should have begotten a yellow only (I think). The spirit that the Serbs displayed, even at 5-0, was at least better than the Ukrainians did (well they were demoralised for a very acceptable reason). They even tried to stage an attack in the style of the Argentines. As for the Argentines, it was fantastic footwork and marvellous team coordination. The accuracy of passes is unsurpassed in the previous matches I saw. Everyone knew where everyone else was (exaggeration). They deserved all 6 of their goals. And Shirley is using all the native names for the countries Italia and Brasil, FIFA designations for Italy and Brazil. The short form for Brazil is a little suggestive though... Australia can be labelled the epitome of surprise. But that miracle must be credited duly to Japan being the epitome of complacency. When they led by 1-0, they were already trying to cut off the match. Many many good chances, they all forfeited through either inaction or inaccurate shots. One goal begets another, and an equaliser soon became a winner and then a thrasher.
